*Night of the Living Dead: The Musical* brings a fresh and humorous twist to the classic 1968 horror film. With book and lyrics by Claire Higgins and music by Steve Winstead, the show blends horror with comedy, offering memorable songs like “Not in My Backyard” and “Trick or Treat.”
Siblings Johnny and Barbra visit their father’s grave, where Johnny, the mischievous antagonist, teases Barbra with the song “They’re Coming to Get You, Barbra,” knowing her fear of scary stories but the joke turns deadly when a figure from the distance attacks and kills Johnny, leaving Barbra screaming and fleeing in terror. She finds refuge in a seemingly empty cabin, but her safety is short-lived. As Ben arrives, the two seek shelter together, leading to the emotionally charged duet “Eyes in the Night,” where they recount their harrowing journeys to the cabin. Barbra’s fear consumes her, and after singing “What’s Happening,” she spirals into a mute, terrified state, setting the stage for the chaos and tension to come.
